Auckland’s Pop Up Globe – Julius Caesar

Pop Up Globe - Julius Caesar

We are now in the third season for the Pop Up Globe in Auckland. This year its back at Ellerslie raceway and there are five different Shakespeare plays being performed. The pop up globe is a full scale temporary working replica of the Globe theatre located in London. Note the current Globe is a modern reconstruction and approximately 230m from the original site. The original one was burned down then rebuilt, but this one was closed in 1642. Like the original globe the ticket options are standing in the front, lower tier bench seating (take a cushion) to the plush seating in the middle and top tiers.

Pop Up Globe - Julius Caesar

This week I was lucky enough to attend the opening night for Julius Caesar. All the plays being put on are putting their own twist to the original Shakespeare themes. Julius Caesar is not exception. Played by the Pembroke Company all the roles in the play are reversed. The main characters written as men, become women and played by women. The secondary characters written as women become men and played by men. This leads to an interesting exploration of gender and role reversal. Plus for entertainment value they don’t shy away from using fake blood. So be prepared to get some spray if you are in the front of the standing area!

To buy tickets to Julius Caesar or one of the other plays (including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth and The Comedy of Errors) at the pop up globe check out the website.
