The internship – Google style

When deciding what to do with your life, it’s probably not the best idea to choose your career off hollywood representations of reality, particularly one starring comedians Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. However not being one follow my own sage advice (and also being a massive nerd), when given the opportunity to where a whirly hat and play quidditch who was I to refuse? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-cGQe3HRMU (the source of my inspiration).

And thus began my moment as a Googler at the Google European Headquarters in Dublin Ireland. So what’s it like to work at google? Well the culture is famous. In Ireland especially you have a load of incredibly smart incredibly international young people. All on a mission to make a difference in the world, through organising information and increasing its accessibility. So in the respect it was pretty awesome.

I met so many people that I could be inspired by and it was really neat getting to work knowing that you were surrounded by such interesting talent. The downside? With so much talent and so much on the go, it was hard for me to figure out what my pathway would be if I worked there. I think the key takeaway on that is that Google is a place where you choose your own adventure… so if I were lucky enough to work there then the onus would be on me to turn the opportunity into career defining moments.

The fun stuff though was in abundance…. The office had its own swimming pool… which blew my mind… because it was better than even the local pools we have where I live. You can work out there during the day, after or before work… really whenever you want. This is necessary because there is sooooo much amazing food around. You can eat breakfast and lunch at Google and basically get any kind of food you dreamed of not to mention on every floor you had mini kitchens and some kind of food entertainment…for example there was an entire wall dedicated to inventing different kinds of fizzy-drinks.  Crazy!
