Wonder brings us the story of Auggie Pullman. A boy born with a genetic disorder which has required him to have 27 surgeries to enable him to see, hear and breathe. Although the surgeries are life saving they leave him with a facial disfigurement. Until he is 12 he has been home schooled by his mum. But his parents decide that at fifth grade it is time for him to go to school. Auggie starts school and learns about the wider world, and being a kid. All the while his school, family, classmates and wider community learn about acceptance.

Wonder is a very cute story, but be prepared to shed a tear. The story tells of Auggie’s amazing journey and those around them, as they keep the precept from Auggie’s teacher Mr Browne in mind. “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind”.

I love in the story how they take turns at telling the story from different kids perspectives, Auggie, his friend Jack Will, his sister Via and her childhood friend Miranda. This style gives a great depth to the story.

Wonder is in cinemas now, check it out!
